RealID update

Submitted by SarekOfVulcan on April 21, 2008 - 3:29pm.

Last week, the Legislature voted to tighten drivers license requirements, baby-stepping toward ignoring the law passed last year barring compliance with the REAL ID standards. As of November 15, you'll have to prove you're a legal resident before you can get a license in Maine -- as if the lines at the DoT weren't long enough.

You'll also have to have your picture taken at the beginning of the application process, instead of after you actually qualify for the license and need your picture taken for it.

I've been trying, honest!

Our goal should be to get a Democrat in the White House in January. Which Democrat is of lesser importance, so I've been trying recently to avoid bashing Clinton here. However, she just made it pretty much impossible to avoid.

Dear Ms O'Brien,

I am writing to take issue with your assertion in the Press-Herald [on April 13] that "people have absolutely had it with big-government, Democratic regimes."

Politicians and the media

Submitted by SarekOfVulcan on April 15, 2008 - 10:58am.

Hunter@kos said it well.

The premise goes like this: the news media reports some minor absurdity about the race. Various pundits go on television to tell Americans how the latest triviality should make them "feel". Ten times as many pundits appear to analyze what would happen if Americans actually felt that way. Then comes the man-on-the-street interviews to see if people really do "feel" that way, and regardless of what actually gets said, by how many, the hypothesis is pronounced correct, or at least "newsworthy"....

Then George W. Bush and a half dozen cabinet members in some back room somewhere authorize the torture of prisoners in U.S. custody, but we can't pay attention to that because we've all got to decide whether we want a president with good bowling scores.
