Tom Allen on Oversight
In today's Bangor Daily News, Tom Allen has an op-ed about the current lack of oversight for war spending. (Hat tip to Daily Kos.)
Earlier this year, Congress approved legislation Massachusetts Rep. John Tierney and I wrote to establish an independent and bipartisan Commission on Wartime Contracting, modeled on Harry Truman’s work, to investigate federal agency contracting in both Iraq and Afghanistan for reconstruction, logistical support of coalition forces and security and intelligence functions. This new law also reforms the procedures federal agencies use to award and manage contracts and requires public disclosure of information on contracts.
On the campaign trail in 1948, people would yell out for Truman to "give ’em hell, Harry." He would respond: "I don’t give them hell. I just tell the truth about them, and they think it’s hell." The hardworking taxpayers in Maine and across America need leaders in Congress who will reveal the truth about Halliburton and other contractors, hold them accountable for how they spend your tax dollars and put the ones who are stealing from public funds behind bars.
